Before entering private vocational rehabilitation, Reeta served in the U.S. Air Force for 6 years as a Services/Personnel Officer, and transitioned to civil service as a Fitness/Sports Complex Director. She later joined the University of Hawaiʻi as the Rehabilitation Counselor Education Graduate/Program Assistant, where she supported the Program Director with the RSA Scholarship Grant, program reaccreditation, and recruitment of prospective students pursuing careers in rehabilitation counseling. Reeta also expanded her experience working with individuals with a wide range of disabilities, including Veterans with service-connected disabilities through Veterans Affairs and members of the general population through the Hawaiʻi Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR).
For the past seven years, she has dedicated her work to helping individuals with disabilities return to suitable gainful employment.
As part of Reeta’s deep commitment to serving others, she envisions a world where individuals with disabilities thrive through meaningful employment and genuine independence. Through compassionate vocational rehabilitation, personalized support, and collaborative community partnerships, Reeta strives to help unlock every person’s unique potential and empower them to build a life of purpose and success.
Laurie Hamano earned her Master’s Degree in Counseling in Education from Oregon State University and her undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She is a nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the State of Hawaiʻi, with registration to counsel injured workers.
With over 40 years of experience as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, Ms. Hamano has dedicated her career to helping individuals overcome physical and psychological challenges and return to meaningful employment. Before entering private practice, she served eight years with the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Corrections, counseling furloughed inmates from a halfway house and the Women’s Correctional Center.
For the past 40 years, Ms. Hamano has provided vocational rehabilitation services to injured workers as both counselor and supervisor. She also served as a vocational consultant for law firms, offering vocational evaluations and expert testimony. Recently, she has retired from counseling and remains as a consultant to Vocational Management Consultants.
Ms. Hamano has been deeply engaged in advocacy, helping to establish the Hawaiʻi Injured Workers Alliance—now known as the Hawaiʻi Injured Workers Association (HIWA)—in 2005. She continues to serve as Treasurer of HIWA and is an active retired member of the International Association of Rehabilitation Providers (IARPS).
Beyond her professional life, Ms. Hamano has shared her passion for health and wellness as a fitness and yoga instructor at the Nuʻuanu YMCA for over 43 years. She is a proud mother of two adult daughters, one granddaughter and a devoted pet parent to three dogs, Zoey, Kokoro and Maki—and occasionally her other 4 “grand-dogs.”
Andrew Alejandro completed his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science from the University of Hawaii, Manoa and his undergraduate degree from California State University of Sacramento. He became a certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC) in March of 2020.
Andrew comes from a household of service providers. His mother worked as a Special Education Teacher and since his upbringing has benefited from serving others with disabilities. From a young age, Andrew understood the importance of servitude and advocacy, a drive that would eventually lead him to the work that he is doing today.
Prior to providing Vocational Rehabilitation services to Hawaii’s injured workers, Andrew worked as a response to intervention (RTI) teacher for elementary aged students, Program Service Coordinator for an Adult Day Health program, and as a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist with the Hawaii Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Andrew has dedicated over 15 years to helping individuals with disabilities and possesses a passion in helping others achieve success. Recently, Andrew has taken on the role of President for the Hawaii Chapter for the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals. Andrew strongly believes that every individual has the ability to contribute to the workforce and enjoys implementing Client-centered counseling to ensure the needs of the injured worker are met.
Mark Twain was often attributed to saying “The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why you are here”. Andrew firmly believes he has found his “why” through the work that he does with VMC and has made it his mission to help injured workers find their “why” as well.
